Fire Sprinkler Clarification

HUD Code Fire Sprinkler Standards became effective on September 15, 2025.

  • The HUD Code Standards preempt the California standards that were in effect prior to September 15,2025.
  • Nothing has substantially changed for California. The HUD standards are essentially the same as those in the prior California Regulations. The only significant difference is that the water supply pressure testing and certification must be done by a “Fire Protection Technician” during the installation of the home.
  • Fire sprinkler systems are not required for all new manufactured homes in California.
  • The HUD Code Fire Sprinkler Standards are applicable only when a local jurisdiction adopts an ordinance requiring fire sprinklers systems systems in all single family homes or when they are voluntarily installed by the manufacturer or home owner.
